ESTA

Electronic System for Travel Authorization

Do I need an ESTA?
Yes — and before you board, not on arrival.

An ESTA is checked by the airline at the gate. Without an approved one you are not carried, so this is a before-you-travel task rather than a border one.

The fee is adjusted for inflation every year by law, which means the figure below has a shelf life and will move again around 1 January 2027.

Checked against the issuing government's own pages on 14 August 2026.

Worth knowingThe fee is adjusted for inflation every year by law, so it will move again around 1 January 2027. No figure for that has been published yet, and anyone quoting one is guessing.

What nobody has published

These are blank on purpose. A blank field is something no government source states — and it is exactly the field invented elsewhere.

What's wrong out there

Figures that circulate widely and are not supported by the official pages.

Commonly got wrongA denied application still costs US$10.27. And the regulation itself (8 CFR 217.5) still says $21 — it was superseded by statute and never amended, so the most official-looking source available is the wrong one.

What changed

Newest first. Every entry links the government page it came from.

1 January 2026United States

ESTA rose again, to $40.27

Three months after the jump to $40, an inflation adjustment took it to $40.27. The odd cents are correct — the law doesn't round. Because the adjustment is annual and mandatory, expect another change around 1 January 2027. A denied application still costs $10.27.

30 September 2025United States

ESTA nearly doubled, from $21 to $40

The increase implemented a provision of the July 2025 budget act. It held for three months before the inflation adjustment superseded it — which is why $40 is still quoted so widely and is no longer right.

4 July 2025United States

A $250 visa fee was enacted — and still isn't being collected

The budget act created a “visa integrity fee” for nonimmigrant visa holders. More than a year on, no implementing rule has been published and the State Department's fee page doesn't mention it. The $250 is a statutory minimum rather than a price, and the “refundable” description is generous: reimbursement would be discretionary, only after the visa expires, and no mechanism exists.

How this is checked

Every figure comes from a primary government source — the regulation, the statutory instrument, the immigration department's own page — and carries the date it was read. Commercial visa agencies are never used as a source; several appear above as examples of stale data.

Where a government hasn't published something, the field is left blank and says so. A blank is honest. A confident wrong number is what this site exists to correct.

Entry rules change without notice and the final decision always rests with a border officer. Check the official link before you travel. This is not immigration advice.
